Private lessons are not required to be in band although about 98% of our students do take privately. We do have students each year that are able to compete without taking lessons; however, they have to practice twice as much to make up the difference that the extra instruction makes.
All students wanting to have a good shot at successfully competing in any individual competitions this year -- solo contest, ensemble contest, all-city band, all-region band -- should be taking privately. We are in a very competitive region in the state. Please understand that students in the other schools in our region do take private lessons. Each year we end up with disappointed students and upset parents who say they had no idea they would need private lessons to be able to successfully compete in our region.
Private lesson arrangements are made with the individual instructors. There is some flexibility in scheduling them during the student's band class period or after school.
If you are interested and in need of financial assistance with the private lessons enrichment program, PLEASE contact one of the directors immediately. We spend quite a bit of time during the summer to secure corporate donations to ensure that ALL students who want to take privately will have the opportunity to do so!
Student Responsibilities
Be properly warmed-up before the lesson time begins.
Prepare every lesson thoroughly.
Evenly spread your practice time during the week. 45 minutes per day is a great plan for success!
Always bring lesson materials and music to the lesson.
Always notify the teacher in advance if you must be absent from a lesson.
Know which reasons are acceptable for "excused" absences.
Parent Responsibilities
Assist your child in having all materials at each lesson.
Identify the best time for practice and encourage regular adherence to that time.
Insist that a regular practice routine is followed. Warm-ups, scales, technical exercises, solo, and band music. Evenly spread practice time each night during the week.
As an expression of interest, periodically observe and make positive comments on the practice session.
Compliment your child for good work and faithfulness in practice. Encourage excellence, set goals, praise effort.
Attend your child's performances. Support their efforts!
Contact the director if you have any questions, need assistance, or if you are concerned about your child's progress.
